Dr. Laura Reed joined the faculty of UT Health Science Center in the Family Nurse
Practitioner Concentration in July 2014. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing
(BSN) in 1986 and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in 1990, both from UT Health
Science Center. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University
of Alabama in 2014. Dr. Reed is a nationally Certified Nurse Educator and a certified
Family Nurse Practitioner since 1990, having practiced in various primary care settings
including end-stage renal disease, transplantation, internal, and family medicine.
She is the inaugural Director of Special Academic Programs for the College of Nursing.
Dr. Reed's teaching responsibilities include Advanced Health Assessment, FNP didactic
and clinical courses, Advanced Role Development, and DNP project courses. Her scholarship
focuses on managing chronic disease processes in the primary care setting and APRN
education, incorporating telehealth and remote patient monitoring into patient care.
As Director of Special Academic Programs, Dr. Reed collaborates with community partners
to develop, implement, and evaluate special academic programs for undergraduate, graduate,
and postgraduate nursing students, aiming to improve the nursing workforce and impact
patient care outcomes in the communities they serve.
Dr. Reed is an active member of the College of Nursing All-Faculty and DNP Faculty
committees and the UT Health Science Center Faculty Senate. She is also a member of
the Greater Memphis Area Advanced Practice Nurses (GMAAPN), where she is a past president
and currently a board member; the Tennessee Nurses Association (TNA) where she is
a past Practice Director; and the Coalition for Access to Care for Tennessee where
she is a founding member, past secretary, and current Coalition Chair. Dr. Reed also
is a member of the Tennessee Simulation Alliance, the American Association of Nurse
Practitioners (AANP), the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF),
the NONPF Telehealth Committee, the North American Menopause Society (NAMS), and Sigma
Theta Tau.
